“Don't miss this brilliant version of Doubt on stage. Doubt is a great play, and American Stage gives it a great production. Simple as that — John Patrick Shanley's parable on the crisis of the Catholic Church is must-see theater, directed by Todd Olson. I can't think of a recent play that brings together ideas, emotion and sheer entertainment value in such brilliant fashion, and all in one fast-paced 90-minute act performed without intermission.”
– John Fleming, St. Petersburg Times

"Doubt dazzles at American Stage…It is wonderful and riveting. I was so taken with Christine Decker’s performance, I felt as if I were encountering the play for the first time. One of the best performances on a local stage in many month. Eric Davis as Father Flynn is also superb, easily the grittiest performance I’ve ever seen him give (as a priest, ironically), and it’s more than satisfying. Doubt, in this production, is a fascinating play, well deserving of its Pulitzer Prize. It’s worth your attention.”
– Mark Leib, Creative Loafing

“The Tampa Bay area premiere of Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning Doubt is a fantastic finale for American Stage Theatre’s 30th anniversary season. With 35 years of performances throughout the Southeastern United States, Christine Decker's (as Sister Aloysius) stage experience is evident whether she is uttering quips that provoke audience laughter or dispensing tyrannical proclamations that underscore the character’s fanaticism. Eric Davis’(as Father Flynn) performance perfectly contrasts the intolerance personified by Aloysius without making the priest appear so saintly that he is above suspicion."
–Lee Clark Zumpe, Tampa Bay Newspaper

The final play of the theatre's 30th anniversary season!

The most lauded play of this century and winner of the Tony Award for "Best Play" and Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Doubt tells the story of a Bronx Catholic school in turmoil during the fall of 1964. Sister Aloysius is an old-school nun who insists that the young and popular Father Flynn is having an inappropriate relationship with Donald Muller, the school's first black student. Armed with nothing more than a resolute belief in her suspicion and a few circumstantial details, she instigates a relentless campaign to remove the priest, enlisting the help of a subordinate nun and the child's tormented mother. Flynn vehemently denies the allegations, but who is telling the truth? This powerhouse drama will keep audiences guessing until the final curtain.

"We are so excited about being the first professional Tampa Bay theatre to produce Doubt," said Todd Olson, American Stage's producing artistic director. "Is there a more important modern play that we could finish our historic 30th anniversary with?"
