“Frankly, Dears, Make Date To See This Knee-Slapper: just too funny to miss…wildly imaginative…rivals the hilarity of last year's The Big Bang…I will write no more, save this: Run, walk, crawl if you have to, but go see this play.”
–Tampa Tribune

“If you're interested in seeing top theater artists at their best, make time for this winner… I saw a production of Moonlight several years ago in Sarasota, but the American Stage offering leaves that version in the dust.”
–Creative Loafing

“Side-splitting…Moonlight and Magnolias takes audiences on a backstage jaunt, poking fun at the Hollywood icons who crafted an American movie classic in a riotous romp….McGee’s depiction of [Ben] Hecht borders on comic brilliance…sight gags and slapstick keep the laughs coming.”
–Tampa Bay Newspaper

“A sure-fire theatrical crowd pleaser, done in the gag-happy tradition of Neil Simon…gleefully politically incorrect.”
–St. Petersburg Times

See us on Studio 10!

American Stage Theatre Company continues its 29th and final historic season in its current building with the poignantly hilarious homage to the making of an American movie classic, Moonlight and Magnolias, running thru Feb. 17.

In this new comedy, 1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new celluloid epic, "Gone with the Wind," because the screenplay just doesn't work. So what's an all-powerful movie mogul to do? While fending off the film's stars, gossip columnists and his own father-in-law, Selznick sends a car for famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and pulls formidable director Victor Fleming from the set of "The Wizard of Oz". Summoning both to his office, Selznick locks the doors, closes the shades and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labor over five days, fashioning a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.

"We are so excited to bring this funny, yet poignant, play to central Florida audiences," said Todd Olson, American Stage's producing artistic director.

Directed by Drew Fracher (Othello), Moonlight and Magnolias stars local favorites Christopher Swan (Othello), Matthew McGee (The Big Bang!), Bryan Barter (War of the Worlds) and Susan O'Gara.
