    Romeo & Juliet In America (The One With the Happy Ending) 

    A Bold and Modern Retelling of Shakespeare's Most Romantic Tragedy

    July 21-August 1, 2021 | Gates Open at 6:30 p.m. | Performance Starts at 7:30 p.m.

    This bold and modern retelling of Shakespeare’s most romantic tragedy imagines how two young lovers, caught in the middle of their feuding families, might meet a different fate. Through party crashing, street fights and clandestine encounters, the plot twists and turns toward a stunning new conclusion where love may just conquer all. Age Recommendation: 12+ Pricing: Wednesday Preview: $30 / $35 Thursday: $30 / $35 Friday: $40 / $45 Saturday: $45 / $50 Sunday: $40 / $45 The first week will have 50 tickets each night as “Pay What You Can.” Call Box Office to order. As part of American Stage’s ongoing accessibility and Next Generation initiatives, ​anyone under 20 years of age can watch this outdoor production for free. This material is intended for ages 12 and up. There are some adult situations including the use of strong language, and themes of sex, suicide and violence.     AS Improv Alumni Reunion Jam
    When: Bar opens 8pm, Jam begins 8:30pm Where: Location TBA $5 All proceeds from the AS Improv Reunion Jam go to Directions for Living, supporting trauma-informed care for the most vulnerable populations in Tampa Bay. Get back in the jam! ASI students, performers, alumni, and instructors are invited to laugh, celebrate, and kick off a return to live, in-person improv comedy.  A fun and supportive environment to jump up to play, perform, and create together! Health and safety guidelines for performers will be outlined at the top of the event. Are you sitting down for this great news? We’ve had fun performing and playing on screens and outside, but now we’re ready to LOL together again at the theatre! Imagine it: a group of humans laughing at a group of humans, who are laughing!     Comedy Writing – Virtual

    How to think, write, speak, create, and be funnier. Explore creative processes, tips & tricks that open new pathways to comedic communication, whatever your medium. Participants will:
    • Explore basic comedic elements, like “yes and”, pattern, and game
    • Understand different types of comedic styles and structures, such as “reversal of expectation”, “escalation”, “spoof”, and more
    • Breakdown ways to heighten and explore concepts and topics
    This workshop is perfect for anyone wishing to develop a comedic voice that is relevant, witty, joyful, and truly their own; for sketch-comedians, playwrights, screenwriters, stand-ups, fine artists, podcasters, journalists, corporate presenters, or anyone who wants to heighten the humor their communication. All experience levels and creative (or non-creative backgrounds) welcome.

    Improv for Everyone

    For anyone interested in laughing, playing, connecting, and refreshing their spirit. It’s not just making things up on the spot, but the joy of connecting with others and creating something new! Explore the joy of improv and reconnect with new players with this “all play” workshop. Participants will:
    • Review improv basics like listening, offering/acceptance, and “Yes, And.”
    • Explore short-form improv games that explore comedic characters, heightening and
    • Breakdown tools of improv scene work like tag outs, edits and walk-ons.
    This workshop is perfect for those looking to try improv for the first time, and for improvisers who’ve taken classes before and are looking for time to play, connect and refresh their skills.

    Return of the Laughs!
    When: 7pm Where: American Stage $25 Are you sitting down for this great news? We’ve had fun performing and playing on screens and outside, but now we’re ready to LOL together again at the theatre! Imagine it: a group of humans laughing at a group of humans, who are laughing! RETURN OF THE LAUGHS is full day of events celebrating everything that makes us giddy with excitement, chortle with glee, and guffaw with joy. Choose your own adventure from 2 improv showtimes, plus a variety of workshops, and a panel conversation with some of Tampa Bay’s most unique and hilarious artists. Join us for the first of many more laughs! We’ll make sure the theatre is squeaky clean… now as for the comedy, we’ll leave that up to you 😉 Act 1: Witty shenanigans & musical comedy stylings ASI short-form team, Swipe Right  (Patrick A Jackson, Cat Lim, Joshua Roriguez, Brian Schuett, Kari Velguth, Donovan Whitney). Then gawk at the drama and tension of your favorite reality docs and trashy tv shows with Tiger Love Survivor Island (Ricky Wayne, Kathleen Taylor, Colleen Cherry, Patrick A Jackson, Jenna Felder, Travis Tyler). Act 2: Odd characters and wild worlds with some of your favorite long-form ASI improvisers (Gavin Hawk, Kathleen Taylor, Phil Hill, Paulo Karukin, Gavin Stark), then a fully improvised musical inspired by the audience with ASI musical improv team, Definitely Not Murderers (Colleen Cherry, Patrick A Jackson, Marissa Nicole Koch, Christian Torres, Tiffany Ford, John Perez) Health & Safety Basics for RTL shows: The bar will be open for both Friday & Saturday shows. Seating will be socially distanced, and capacity will be limited. We ask guests to wear masks when moving about the space beyond their seating pod.

After an extended pause from the COVID-19 pandemic, THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS by St Pete playwright Natalie Symons, who developed this play at American Stage, finally gets its world premiere. 21st Century Voices: New Play Festival – Mainstage Selection In Buffalo, NY, aging funeral home custodian Miles lives with his middle-aged daughter Mabel, who spends her days writing letters to prison inmates. When a court-appointed guardian threatens to take away their home, Miles sets out to set Mabel up with Todd, an inept mortician. It is a father’s fierce determination not to accept his daughter’s fate that ignites an endearing human comedy about love, loss, loneliness and the healing power of laughter. “We are over the moon to be bringing back this tremendous show and giving it the true World Premiere that it deserves,” said Associate Artistic Director Kristin Clippard. “The set of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS has stood like a ghost in our theater for 16 months, and the lights will finally shine on this delightful story.
