American Stage Apprentice: Massiel Evans

Massiel Evans is a passionate island girl from Nassau, The Bahamas. She recently received her M.F.A in Acting and Directing from Eastern Connecticut State University along with a film studies minor. While in The Bahamas, Massiel has starred in two local plays and one local bahamian movie. Her first year she received the leading role in the main stage production, “Chitra.” Since then she has starred in four other shows as an actress, two shows as an assistant director for Eastern and for a professional theater company, Spectrum Theater. Her last semester she was the primary director of a main stage production called “Blood at the Root.” She has also written, directed and filmed two small pieces under her film studies minor. Massiel has been heavily involved throughout her time at Eastern and she’s now ready to bring those experiences and learn more with American Stage.

  • What was your first experience with theatre?: I was about 13 or 14 and had to do a Christmas performance for youths at my church back home.

  • Why did you want to be a part of the apprentice program?: The company aligned with what I thrive for as an artist and I saw the amazing opportunities I could gain and learn while being an apprentice for American Stage.

  • What would you be doing if you weren’t working in theatre: Pursuing an education in either interior design/architecture or criminology.

  • Favorite play: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”

  • Favorite movie/T.V. show: “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Walking Dead”

  • Who’s at the top of your playlist right now?: Harry Styles

  • What do you hope to do after your apprenticeship?: To be signed with an agency and segway into acting for film while still acting in various theatres.

  • Hobbies: watching movies/shows, spending time outdoors, playing sims, traveling.

  • Finish the sentence: “All I want is…”: For St. Pete’s weather to get slightly cooler. And to star in a major role in a movie and or TV show.

  • It’s a regular Friday night. What are you doing?: In bed chewing on snacks, watching snap stories of people partying, hanging on boats in The bahamas and wishing that was me.

About the Apprenticeship Program:

American Stage, a professional, AEA, non-profit theatre company, each year offers an Apprenticeship Program designed for early-career theatre professionals and recent college graduates looking to gain full-time, professional experience in their field. We seek passionate and motivated candidates interested in receiving on-the-job training from theatre professionals and valuable hands-on experience at a highly regarded nonprofit, equity theatre company with a 40-year tradition in St. Petersburg, FL.

Available apprenticeships include Acting & Production, Stage & Production Management, Design & Technical Theatre, Education & Outreach, and Arts Administration. Apprenticeships usually begin in late September and end in August of the following year. Only candidates who are able to commit full-time to the entire season are be considered.
